Slide one: Everyone thinks college is the only way to be successful, the only way to go. You have to go to college to get a good job and they spend their whole life trying to prepare for the future trying to get ready for college, when in reality you can’t be fully ready.

Slide two: You have to take tests over and over again, the test that are supposed to get you ready for college. The SAT's, ACT's the EOG or EOCs finals papers and they all are supposed to get you ready for college.

Slide three: they start younger and younger every year preparing children for their college years. They start testing you in the third grade and they continue to test you until you graduate. And even now they are pushing parents to push their child younger and younger. Baby's reading books, counting numbers...

Slide four: Families should focus on being a happy family ones who enjoy to be with each other parents should not push children beyond what they should know kids should be kids while they can instead of being stressed out about failure at the age of four.

Slide five: my parents never pushed me too hard in school they wanted me to live my life and have fun doing so and I agree with a lot of this. Stress on children is not good for them stressing about things like what they should be when they grow up. They should however try in school they should do what they can and do their best but they need time to be children.

Slide 6: You go through school making friends, having fun, falling in and out of love, making memories that will last forever. You will never remember the paper you had to write in English class about that book you read or the year that the French won the revolution but you will always remember you prom, your friends, they things that you think is important in your life.

Slide 7: if you don’t think the things you are learning in school are important than you don’t really learn it. You do enough to get by and then forget it the first chance you get. And the way I learn best is by experience. I’m a very hand on person and I learn from the mistakes I have made. I don’t learn much from school I only learn from school if I think it is important.

Slide 8: who gets to decide what is important for you and what is not? Colleges give you a set of courses you have to take, do they benefit you? Do they benefit you future? Does learning about a war a hundred years ago change 2+2? You get overwhelmed with all this pointless stuff you have to "learn” for you to be “successful".

Slide 9: Being successful has many different definitions, you can ask a hundred people and get different answers from them all, some might say it’s getting a good job, some might say its making lots of money, and then again some might say just living life every day is a success.

Slide 10: with college you have to learn how to balance your life. You have school, work, family, friends, and another thing that is important to you all cramped into one day and you wonder how you are going to do 48 hours’ worth of stuff in only 24 but somehow you do. And it’s hard and life is hard and you wonder how you are going to do it.

slide11: and there is also the big problem of Peer Pressure. With that huge party going on tonight, everyone is going to be there and if you want to be anyone in life you would go, even that boy you like down the hall said he was going but there are going to be drugs there and you have a final tomorrow should you go? The answer is no you shouldn't but you do anyways

Slide 12: which gets you regretting and regretting is bad because once you start to regret it is a downward spiral of doom from there you just keep regretting and you think why would you do that and you can’t forget it and it starts to hold you back a little.

Slide 13: But you can reset, start over, forget who you were and become who you are, and who you will be. And if you find the good things in life, see the glass half full find different perspectives. The mistakes you have made will no longer be mistakes with regrets but they will be lessons you learn from.

Slide 14: I was talking to my friend and he was complaining about how he is never happy and how he just wishes to be happy and I got mad because this is not looking at the glass half full he looks at his life and sees unhappiness so I told him to stop that the only thing from keeping you from being happy is yourself

Slide 15: no matter what you are going through there is always a light at the end of the tunnel you just have to find the strength to carry on and keep moving forward with your life. There will be obstetrical and it will be a long tetrous path but you will get there eventually.

Slide 16: Determination is a key aspect in getting to where you’re headed; nothing can stop you if you’re determined to do something. Or at least that is the way I am, but then again I have been known for having the headrest head ever known to man, literally and mentally. If I tell myself I am going to do something I will do it.

Slide 17:  Courage is the other thing you need. It’s not easy changing what you know to something newer bigger and better. Frankly it’s terrifying, I was terrified when I graduated, or when I started college even when I got my job and went in for an interview. But I faced that fear with the courage I have and hoped for the best.

Slide 18: What mistakes you have made does not define you. Whatever life throws at you cannot define you, confine you, deny you, and what you do with your decisions is all on you.  College readiness is not something you can prepare for but is something you have to learn about on the way with trial and error, mistakes, courage, regret, and determination.

Slide 19: I am a Charlotte 49er I came to college expecting a whole nother world and what I got was just college. Students studying, partying, and we are all slowly learning and growing together to become the next community of people in the world the next generation the ones who make the decisions.

Slide 20: weather you are ready for college or not life is what you make of it. You can make it a good life doing the things you should, or the things that you think you should and not regretting anything learning from your mistakes and living your life the way you want to.

I learned a lot from this project. I learned that your ready for what you want to learn not what you have to learn and I also learned that no one is really ready for college until you get there. All of the classes you take in high school might be helpful and some may be pointless. But you learn from every experience in life and what ever path you chose is the greatest path because its your path.

So change of plans... I was planning to record my screen while I took notes regarding collage readiness, but my internet will not support the program so here is a whole new idea.

Interview with David (12) and Megan(18)!

1) What do you want to be when you grow up?

David: Automotive Engineer
 Megan: Undecided

2) Have you thought a lot about college and/or your future?

David: No not really
Megan: Yes I think about it everyday and everyday my mind changes and my idea change and right now I just want to know what I want.

3) Do you think you are ready for college?

Megan: Yes

4) What have you done to prepare for college?

Megan: Study

5) What do you think was the biggest influence in your college carreer?

Megan: Parents

Out of these five questions you can get a lot. Because I had only interviewed two people my research is not done but I can tell that High school and studying alone does not get you ready for collage. Also you can think your ready for college but you will never know until you actually experience college and its rollercoster ride.

David:
Age:12
Plays football, is in the 6th grade at East Union Middle School where he enjoys his day with friends.

Megan:
Age: 18
Is the twin to an amazing girl named Michelle and went to Central Piedmont Community Collage for a year. Is currently deciding on what to do as a career.

The Collage of Readiness!

I chose college readiness because it hits home with me. I dont believe I was ready for college but at the same time I think I was. Being ready for college revolves around everything in you life, you family, religion, friends, media and everything else. All of the pictures above show the rollercoster I am riding getting into college, staying in college, and graduating college to follow my dream. And if a picture really does say a thousand words and tell a thousand stories I believe I just wrote a book.

When high-school students got together and put on paper what they thought was the biggest influence in their college readiness there was some interesting things but most importantly there were a lot of common things. Most everyone thought school and their parents to be their biggest influence and there were other common factors also like religion, work and media. And thinking back all of these factors were big influences in my life as well, but mostly my family. My injury project will be focused around my college readiness and my family and how they have lead me here today.

Collage Readiness

Sorry this post is posted so late when I got home last night all I wanted to do was sleep. and this ties into my collage readiness, was I prepared for collage? Am I ready for collage now that im already a semester in? The answer to these questions are... even if your not ready you have to be you dont have a choice. and thats what i feel like sometimes like i dont have a choice other than to work and go to school. But a thousand other questions run through my mind as I think this, What happens if I fail a class? what if i am working to much? is my dad going to be proud of me? and as i go through this semester I am  going to try and answer these questions...

$ = Happiness... Not

Picture0224132147_1.jpg In Class on Wednesday we read different quotes from a text named Flow. we were assigned to pick one of the quotes and write about it. Only one stood out to me.

" To improve life one must improve the quality of experience."

This quote went on to say something about money but I can not remember exactly and  I continued to write in my day book how money does not buy happiness that the way you live your life changes everything. Today I re-read this quote and realize that we only get one life we need to live it the way we want to, we need to find time for the important things in life like family, love, friends, dreams, reality, and anything else your heart desires.

Should We?

Should we invite children to speak their home language in school?

We were asked this question during English class and to write about what we thought of the question. I wrote in my day book that " Although home language is good to know and speak you should not use it in the class room." I think that in the class room there should be a common language that everyone in the classroom can understand. In our classrooms we use "Proper English" and most of us have been learning this language since the first word we spoke. If i came into the classroom speaking Latin no one would understand me that is why i think it is important to speak a common language in the class room.

Schoolville

Schoolville

I'm going to try and do thins blog a little different and try to make it more... me.

Schoolsville - Billy Collins

Glancing over my shoulder at the past,
I realize the number of students I have taught
is enough to populate a small town.

I can see it nestled in a paper landscape,
chalk dust flurrying down in winter,
nights dark as a blackboard.

The population ages but never graduates.
On hot afternoons they sweat the final in the park
and when it's cold they shiver around stoves
reading disorganized essays out loud.
A bell rings on the hour and everybody zigzags
into the streets with their books.

I forgot all their last names first and their
first names last in alphabetical order.
But the boy who always had his hand up
is an alderman and owns the haberdashery.
The girl who signed her papers in lipstick
leans against the drugstore, smoking,
brushing her hair like a machine.

Their grades are sewn into their clothes
like references to Hawthorne.
The A's stroll along with other A's.
The D's honk whenever they pass another D.

All the creative-writing students recline
on the courthouse lawn and play the lute.
Wherever they go, they form a big circle.

Needless to say, I am the mayor.
I live in the white colonial at Maple and Main.
I rarely leave the house. The car deflates
in the driveway. Vines twirl around the porch swing.

I highlighted a few key words that stood out to me and I'm going to try to explain what i think this poem means to me.

Taught- past tence teach, he was a teacher, but I think that the is still teaching I think we all teach diffrent things in different ways we never stop teaching and we always leave an impression on someone weather it is good or bad.

Never graduates- I think this phase means that you never quit learning, you learn something new everyday so in away no one ever graduates.

Mayor- He is talking about himself he is both of these, he is a teacher teaching as he lives but also a learner learning something new everyday so it refers to him over the other people doing the same as he is doing they have just not been doing it at long.

New Dog

New Dog

Picture0127132151_1.jpgOn Monday I was walking my sisters dog, Carmel, and was walking towards the pasture when he growled. I looked an I could not see anything unusual so I ignored him, then my other dog, Buster, hair on his shoulder stood up an I thought to myself what is wrong with these animals so I looked real hard and I saw something move. I told myself that it was a goat and started down towards it. As I got closer I saw that it was another dog, a beagle and she is heavily pregnant too. I brought her inside and she has already stole our hearts and made her way into the family. so when we ha writing into the day on Wednesday she is who I wrote about.

String Games

String Games!!!

On the first day of class we learned some string games like cup and saucer. This reminded me of when I was in the 6th grade when I learned what a string game was for the first time. My friend Courtney was in girl scouts and they had learned how to make things with string and I asked her to teach me Jacobs ladder. She told me that it was really hard and it took her months to just learn how to do it, but I was determined to get this right so she showed me. She only showed me once but I watched really carefully. I tried to do it and for hours I struggled with it trying different ways to twist and tangle the stringy mess. finally when it was close to go home I did it I completed Jacob's ladder. I was proud of what I accomplished and it went to show my  hardheadedness when I put my mind to doing something I'm going to do it no matter how long it takes.
